Marshall will go the extra mile — and more — the weekend of
Nov. 14 and 15.
As a member of both the San Marcos High School band and football team,
the junior tuba player will participate with fellow musicians in the marching
band’s highlight of the year — the Bands of America Grand
National Championships in Indianapolis.
“We’re the only California band going to that,’’
said band director Dan Garske. “Usually just one California band
goes to Indianapolis. Nobody else goes to the effort.’’
The same weekend, the Royals gridders, currently 5-0, meet St. Bonaventure,
also 5-0, in the Channel League finale, which could help decide the league
championship and C.I.F. rankings.
Marshall, a backup center and outside linebacker, will have it both ways
— traveling with the band to Indianapolis for the contest preliminaries,
flying back to Santa Barbara for Friday night’s game and returning
to Indianapolis for Saturday’s band semifinals.
