The South Coast’s whitewashed gleam sure is shiny. It’s so shiny, in fact, that many lives just fall off radar and vanish into oblivion. When news of social expats does hit, it’s often of the riffraff, unkempt and hassling State Street’s fortunate.

But that’s just a few.

The rest, unwilling or unable to cough up for regular apartments, are exercising their options.

Record recall attracts a crowd

"Ladies and gentlemen, the governor of the great state of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger!”

Across the South Coast, hope, joy and fear met those words from Tonight Show host Jay Leno. Apathy, however, was conspicuously absent in voters’ hearts.

“I’m never seen anything like this,” said Harold Kim, a 10-year veteran of Santa Barbara County elections, as lines at Santa Barbara High’s polling place stretched out the door and around a corner.

“Usually people just leave when they see the line. Today they stayed. They must be really angry one way or the other.”
