Easy rider

I t’s tax time 2003, the year of Harley Davidson’s Centennial birthday, and a local CPA and Harley mechanic continues to be an easy rider.

Paul Lewis, 92, sometimes watches TV when he entertains guests at his Samarkand residence — but he’s not so much into Oprah as he is his 1920s home-movies of himself riding a Harley.

“There I am, standing on my seat, riding with no hands!” he laughed, with his hair meticulously combed and his suit and tie cleaned and pressed. “I should have been shot for doing that sort of thing.”

Vets to talk about pets


Santa Barbarans prize their pets — whether it is a show animal or an orphan adopted from the Humane Society.

Animal lovers will get the lowdown on all they need to know from a trio of veteran local veterinarians, Doctors Greg McDonald, James Strogoff and Bud Stuart, who will co-author a weekly “Pet Talk’’ column debuting this week in the South Coast Beacon.
